COLUMBIA A service to honor the life of Ray Curtis, 76, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Blaine Walker, a close family friend, will officiate. The family will visit with friends and family at the funeral home following the service. Ray Curtis, husband of Genny Mahoney Curtis, died Tuesday, December 30, 2014, after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Hopewell, Va., a son of the late L.L. and Myrtle Curtis. He was a U.S. Army veteran, a USC Letterman, and retired after 33 years of service at USC. He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, coach, and an avid fan of the Gamecocks. He enjoyed playing handball and sharing his love for the game. Ray never met a stranger, eagerly sharing stories and talking about sports. His infectious enthusiasm will be missed. In addition to his wife, Ray is survived by his son, Kevin Curtis (Lynda); daughter, Michele Baxter (Hugh); grandchildren, Hannah, Taylor, and Curtis Baxter; his sister, Kay Williams (Earl) of Colonial Heights Va.; brother, Alvin Curtis (Ann) of Farnham, Va.; and sister-in-law, Opal Curtis of Hopewell, Va. He was predeceased by his brother, EW Curtis. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Ray’s memory to The V Foundation for Cancer Research, 106 Towerview Court, Cary, NC 27513.
