A 20-year veteran of the US Army, Retired First Sergeant Kirchner died Tuesday, September 24, 2024, after a long illness. Born in Paris, Illinois, he was a son of the late William Donald Kirchner and Juanita Ruth Jones Kirchner.
At the age of 24, Larry was drafted into the US Army. As part of this service, he served 18 months in Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star Medal. He also served 2 tours of duty in Korea. He retired after 20 years of service at Fort Jackson having attained the rank of First Sergeant. Having shaped the lives of so many young soldiers, he was looked upon as a tough but compassionate leader. Military service was the greatest honor of his life.
Larry loved and raised his family within a military life, his wife and 4 children following wherever he was stationed. Their lives owe much to his legacy, always wanting the best for his family. In his private life, Larry had a deep love for NASCAR and the Chicago Cubs, watching all the races and enjoying ballgames on TV.
Larry is survived by his wife, Leanita Wolfe Kirchner; daughter, Cathlyn (Melissa) McGuire, sons, Eric (Josephina) Kirchner and Chris (Ar’Triel) Kirchner, as well as 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandsons. Additionally, a daughter, Angela Nicklasson and a son, Kent Kirchner from a previous marriage. Also survived by siblings, Nancy Johnson and Michael Kirchner and their respective families. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Krista Kirchner Zakrzewski.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at NHC Parklane Rehab Facility for their care and compassion in taking care of Larry in his last days.
