Katherine G. Brown, affectionately known as Kay, was born in Greenville, PA, on October 12, 1921 to Charles and Eva Benkovic Galekovic, and passed away peacefully on September 30, 2022; 12 days shy of her 101st birthday.
Following high school and business school, she ventured into the world with her best friend and wound up in Louisville, KY, working for the National Horseman publication. Her best friend introduced her, on a blind date, to a young Captain, Charles H. Brown, who was stationed at Fort Knox. They married in June 1949.
Kay enjoyed being an Army Officer’s wife, hosting many fine parties in their home. She did volunteer work at the various bases where Col. Brown was stationed. She was a gourmet cook who enjoyed cooking and crocheting, and she made many afghans for family and friends.
Kay and Col. Brown retired in Greenville, SC, where they built their retirement home. After 45 years of marriage, Col. Brown passed away in February 1994.
In March 2017, Kay sold her home in Greenville, SC and moved to a Lexington, SC retirement home to be closer to her son.
In addition to her husband, Kay was predeceased by her sister, Margaret “Marge” Barber of Greenville, PA.
She is survived by her sons, Charles “Chip” H. Brown, Jr. (Lisa) and Ronald “Ron” E. Brown (Pam); grandson, Charles “Trey” H. Brown, III; granddaughter, Loren Edwards; great grandchildren, Reese, Emmalee, and David and brother, Walter “Walt” Galekovic of Greenville, PA.
A private ceremony for family will be held at a later date.
