June Niggel Derrick died on April 11, 2024. Born in Columbia, S.C. on June 19, 1930, she was the youngest of 7 children born to the late Carl Joseph Niggel, Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth Modlin Niggel, all of whom predeceased her.
June began studying piano at the age of 5 and continued through college, where she was a Music Major at the University of South Carolina. An accomplished pianist, she also studied Organ with Professor Robert Van Doren, the organist for Trinity Episcopal Cathedral. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority at USC. June worked in banking for 25 years as Branch Manager for Omni Savings Bank and Carolina First Bank.
She is survived by her daughters Elizabeth Wofford (John), Catherine Baker (Tom) and Ellison Robinson (Clay). She was beloved "Noonie" to her adoring grandchildren John Wofford, Ellison Wofford, Richard Baker (Alyssa DeWyer), Lissie Baker Ayorinde (Oluseyi), Henry Robinson, Meredith Robinson Weldon (Hunter), Sam Robinson, and welcomed her first great grandchild, Kennedy June Weldon, on February 28th. She was also predeceased by her devoted friend, Harvey Rosen.
"Junebug" was beautiful, smart, funny, determined, generous, loving and kind to everyone she met. She was blessed with almost 94 years of good health and lived independently, driving to church, the gym, and the Piggly Wiggly. June was a devout Catholic and dedicated herself to serving at Clean of Heart Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul food distribution, and Washington St. United Methodist Church Soup Cellar. She touched innumerable lives with her kind and caring spirit.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at St. Joseph Catholic Church. 3600 Devine St., Columbia S.C. 29205. A private burial was held at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
