Joseph H. Lumpkin Sr.

COLUMBIA - Joseph Henry Lumpkin, Sr. died peacefully on Friday, December 6, 2013. Born in Columbia on May 7, 1925, he was the son of Bryan Hopkins Lumpkin and Frances Herren Lumpkin.

A graduate of Columbia High School and University of South Carolina, Joe served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He was the president of the Lumpkin Agency and was elected president of the South Carolina Board of Realtors. In retirement, Joe worked as a substitute rural Postal Carrier. Joe is a charter member of St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, where he served as the Senior Warden.

Joe was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Laura Dowe Lumpkin; brother, Bryan Hopkins Lumpkin, Jr; sisters, Jean L. Harvin and Frances L. Martin.

He is survived by his sister, Ann L. Brunson; son, Joseph Henry Lumpkin Jr.(Carol) of Columbia; daughter, Laurie Lumpkin King, of Spartanburg; grandsons, Joseph Henry Lumpkin III (Maggie), Bryan James Lumpkin, Robert Perry King III (Margaret Ann), Andrew Lumpkin King, Chandler Dowe King; grandsons, Simon McBrayer Lumpkin and Theodore Elliott Lumpkin.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 12, 2013 at St Martin’s-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church, 5220 Clemson Ave, Columbia SC. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields, 5220 Clemson Ave., Columbia, SC 29206 or to WJB Dorn VA Hospital, c/o Voluntary Service, Attn: Warriors Walk, 6439 Garner’s Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
