COLUMBIA – Funeral services for John Henry Strickland, 85, will be held at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, July 21, 2011 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212. Interment will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends after the service at the funeral home.
Mr. Strickland was born December 15, 1925 in Ware Shoals, SC and passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2011. He was a son of the late Jefferson Davis Strickland and Daisy Little Strickland. He is survived by his wife of sixty-three years, Sarah Seymore Strickland. Mr. Strickland retired with thirty-five years of service from the Columbia Fire Department. He was a 32nd Degree Mason of the Dutch Fork Lodge and a member of the Scottish Rites and Jamil Temple. He was a member of the Fairfield Good Sams Club. John served as a Merchant Marine during World War II. He enjoyed camping and was an avid follower of bluegrass music. He left many memories to be cherished by his children and grandchildren. John was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of Columbia; daughters, Thelma King and son-in-law, Michael King of Charleston and Lois Swain and son-in-law, Mac Swain of Chapin; grandson, Justin Swain and his wife, Aimee of Charleston; grandson, Michael Swain of Columbia and great-grandchildren, Kylie Grace and Jesse Rylan Swain. Mr. Strickland was predeceased by his parents; two brothers and a sister.
