Jack was born August 6, 1928 in Newark, Ohio. He was captain of the Newark High School basketball team, and was on the track and football teams. He worked for his father and uncle at Slater Brothers Candy loading vending machines and making candy. He was a member of Mound Builders Country Club, where he developed a love for golf. Jack attended Denison University and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity, then transferred and graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in Business. Jack was a loyal Ohio State football fan to say the least…if Ohio State was playing…Jack was cheering. After an honorable discharge from the Army after serving in the Korean War, he worked for Worthington Golf Ball where he sold the first ball to Putt Putt. Jack spent the rest of his career and retired from the Shakespeare Sporting Goods Company where he lead as Region Sales Manager Fishing Division, Manager of the Professional Golf Division, and Director of Planning Development. He enjoyed decades of friendship with his very close friends, The Pawleys Island Rat Pack. They called him JACKIE THE FISHING MACHINE. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, godfather, guardian, uncle and grandpa. He spent a lot of time with his family sharing his love of Jesus, gardening and sports.
He is preceded in death by his mother, Myrtle Hilda MacLaurin Slater and father, Christopher John Slater; brother, Bill Slater, and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marilyn Sue Slater; daughter, Polly Slater of Columbia; daughter, Wendy Kemp and husband, Mike; niece, Elizabeth Eberts; son, Michael Slater and wife, Pam Slater of Fayetteville, NC and four grandchildren, John Kemp of Columbia, Jessica Kemp of Fort Mill, SC, McKendree Slater of Raeford, NC and Brennen Slater of Raeford, NC.

Service details will be announced at a later date. A Memorial Celebration will be held in Pawleys Island for family and friends on his birthday weekend in August 2020.
