Columbia: A graveside service for John Calhoun McCain, 87, of Columbia will be held at 12 o’clock on Tuesday, June 21, 2011 at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery, 6688 South Carolina 269, Winnsboro, SC with The Rev. Paul Monroe officiating. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11 o’clock Tuesday morning at Shives Funeral Home, 5202 Colonial Drive, Columbia, SC.
Mr. McCain died Friday, June 17, 2011. Born June 1, 1924 in Columbia, he was a son of the late William Arthur McCain and Carrie Boland McCain. Mr. McCain proudly served his country in the US Navy during World War II. He was an avid sports fan, and particularly favored USC. During his time in the navy he pitched a no hitter in 1947. He worked over 30 years for Mack Trucks located on Bluff Road. Mr. McCain was a former member of First Baptist Church of Columbia. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Lillian McCain; daughters, Sandy McCain Camp, Sharon McCain (Larry) Rickborn of Columbia and Christie McCain (Jimmy) James of Columbia; grandchildren, Cresta (David) Weissenburger, John-Philip Camp, and Emily (Scot) Webster; great grandchildren, Morgan, Madison, Reagan and Jackson; sisters, Margaret M. Joye and Roberta McCain; brothers, George Edward McCain and wife, Beverly, Marshall McCain and wife, Corene as well as many nieces and nephews. Mr. McCain was preceded in death by his brother, William Arthur McCain, sister, Dorothy Franklin, brother-in-law, William Joye and son-in-law, Phil M. Camp.
