Born in Columbia, SC, he was a son of the late Harold James La Schuma and Louise Bailey Wallace La Schuma. He was a 1964 graduate of Lower Richland High School. A Vietnam veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy Reserves for 31 years as an E-6 Seabee. He later worked for the SC Department of Mental Health and the SC State Fair until he retired. John was president of East Columbia Optimist Club and served on the board of Ronald McDonald House. He was a deacon at Eastwood Baptist Church and attended Greenlawn Baptist Church. His hobbies included fishing, golfing, and baking.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Janet S. La Schuma, daughter Nicole French, and son Matt La Schuma, all of Columbia, SC; three grandchildren, Taylor French of Cumming, GA, Megan French of Savannah, GA, and Kelci French of Canton, GA; great-granddaughter, Marley French; and numerous first cousins who he considered brothers and sisters.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Lorn La Schuma and his sister, Nova La Schuma.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to SC State Fair Ride of Your Life Scholarship or the Ronald McDonald House of Columbia.
