COLUMBIA Jennie Louise Macfie Tompkins passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 30, 2016. She was born February 21, 1926 in Columbia, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Nathan and Louise S. Macfie. She attended the public schools in Columbia and Washington, D.C. and graduated from Columbia High School. She was employed by Morris Furniture Distributor and later the South Carolina Employment Security Commission. She took an early retirement to care for her husband, the late Jack Warren Tompkins, Jr. who was battling cancer. She and Jack were married on January 28, 1950 at The Church of the Good Shepherd and were members there until 1957 when they moved from their Senate Street home to Forest Acres becoming one of the founding members of St. Michael’s and All Angels Episcopal Church. Jennie was predeceased by her husband, Jack who passed away on May 10, 1992. She is survived by her son, Jack Warren Tompkins, III (Emily); her daughter, Jennie “Mackie” Tompkins DeWitt (Mike), both of Columbia; her brother, Thomas Earle Macfie (Jourdan) of Greenville. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Taylor DeBerry Tompkins, Jack Warren Tompkins, IV (Nora Kate), both of Columbia, Michael Edwin DeWitt, Jr. (Leila) of Greenville and Jennie Marie DeWitt of Charleston. Jennie also had numerous nieces and nephews. Jennie was a loving daughter, wife mother, and friend. She never met a stranger and was a true friend with a heart of gold putting the needs of others before her own. She will be deeply missed by family and friends who will always have many wonderful and cherished memories of her. Requiem Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, at The Church of the Good Shepherd. The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. in the church Parish Hall prior to the service. Interment will follow the service in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
