COLUMBIA – A graveside service for Janet Grooms will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2020 in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 27, 2020, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Northeast Chapel. A reception will follow the graveside service at the funeral home.
Mrs. Grooms passed away Sunday, February 23, 2020.
Jan was very present in her boy’s lives from Boy Scout Leader to Little League Coach, as well as Community Youth Center Volunteer and Athletic Booster Club Member. Even though her boys kept her busy, she still had time for ceramics, macrame and her husband, Dave. Believe it or not, she also worked outside the home. She and her sister were certified nurse aides Columbus, GA. Then later she spent many years working in the Army Air Force Exchange.
She had a great love for country music, especially Allan Jackson. Jan and Dave enjoyed attending Fan Fair and met many country music stars over the years. Once they both retired, they traversed the U.S. Jan was proud of the fact that she visited all the continental United States, Hawaii, the territory of Guam and Canada.
Jan became a mother-in-law in 1982 and a grandmother in 1985. She tackled this role like she did all the others and was the best mother in law and grandmother anyone could ask for. She will live on in all of the lives she touched.
She is survived by husband, David Grooms; son, Danny Walters, wife Danna and children Stephanie, Aaron and Christopher; son, Kenneth Walters, wife Barbara and kids Taylor, Elizabeth, Melanie, and Brian; son, Robert Grooms, wife Melinda and children, Scott and Alexander; four great-grandchildren; sister, Margaret Boyle of Mary Esther, Fla; and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews, whom she loved.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Lesco and Leona Baldwin of Columbus, Ga.; brother, Robert Baldwin; and sister, Patricia Brown.
