Born in Canton, Ohio, he was the son of the late James Wilkie, Sr. and Leonore Wilkie. He graduated from Mentor High School in Mentor, Ohio, where he played baseball and football. James was also involved in the 4H club, competing in events with his horse, Playboy. He attended Miami of Ohio University before serving in the U.S. Navy. During his service, James was stationed in Bremerhaven, Germany and Rota, Spain, where he and his new wife lived and started their life together.
After his military service, he returned to complete his bachelor's degree at Miami of Ohio University. He began a career with the Kroger Co., where eventually he was transferred to Columbia, S.C. It was here that he dedicated his life to providing for his family. He loved coaching baseball and being involved with any sports that his son played. He was a dedicated husband and father, who instilled a strong work ethic and sense of integrity.
He went on to build a dedicated career with the Kroger Co., where he retired after more than 35 years of service. Following his retirement, James loved spending time with friends and family. Whether he was visiting his son and grandchildren or taking countless trips here and abroad with his wife, he was the happiest being around those he loved.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Wilkie; son, Kevin (Katie) Wilkie; his beloved grandchildren Banks and Ellis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Sally Hill, and brother, Robert Wilkie.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
