COLUMBIA – Funeral services for James Lemon Tapp, Jr., age 77, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Virginia Wingard Memorial United Church with Reverend John W. Culp officiating. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the church prior to the service. Entombment will follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens and Mausoleum. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Pets Inc., 300 Orchard Drive, West Columbia, SC 29171.
Mr. Tapp, son of the late Louise Kelly Tapp and James L Tapp, Sr., died August 10, 2011. He was born in Columbia, SC. He was a graduate of Dreher High School where he played football, and the University of Georgia where he was president of PKA fraternity. He returned to Columbia as part of the third generation to work in the family business, Tapp’s Department Store, where he served as president. He served on the BB&T Advisory Board and was on the Board of Directors of Richland Memorial Children’s Hospital. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Charter Member of the Breakfast Optimist Club, Ducks Unlimited, Wild Turkey Federation, Quail Unlimited and Quality Deer Management. He was a lifetime member of the Georgia Bulldog Club and a Gamecock Club Member for 57 years. He was a avid sportsman as shown by his love of the outdoors, his love of animals and in hunting and fishing. He will be missed by all of his hunting buddies and the members of his “Hoot Owl” hunt club.
Mr. Tapp is survived by his wife of 52 years, Peggy Tapp; mother-in-law, Gladys H. Chamblee; daughters, Cheryse Tapp Jordan (Clyde) and Tina Tapp Huffstetler (Terry); son, James L. Tapp, III (Jody); grandchildren, Crystal Louise Huffstetler, James L. Tapp, IV and Taylor Paige Tapp; sister, Louise Tapp Joye and step mother, Neta H. Tapp. His wife, children and grandchildren were the light of his life.
