COLUMBIA - James Edwin Hunter III entered into eternal rest on Monday, October 23, 2017 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Cathedral on Thursday, October 26, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with a reception following in Satterlee Hall. Burial in the churchyard will precede the service. Mr. Hunter was born in Sumter, S.C. on October 22, 1925, the son of Sara deSaussure Edmunds and James Edwin Hunter, Jr. He attended Columbia public schools, Georgia Tech, and graduated from Clemson in 1949 with a degree in electrical engineering. His college career was interrupted by World War II. At age 17, following in his father’s footsteps, he joined the Marine Corps. He served three years with the Second Marines, engaging in combat on Saipan, Tinian and Okinawa. At the end of the war, he served as part of the occupying force in Nagasaki, Japan. He maintained his contacts and love of the Corps throughout his life. He began his engineering career with Deering Milliken’s research trust and then worked for Harrison Wright in Charlotte. In 1959, he started Hunter and Walden, Inc. He was president of the Charlotte Engineers Society for four years and was recognized by the association for his distinguished service. Upon his return to South Carolina, he founded Pantech Consulting Engineers in Columbia, a firm that designed power and communication projects throughout the Eastern U.S. and the Middle East. Jim enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was president of the Charlotte Nature Museum for several terms and was instrumental in bringing the planetarium to that institution. He was also a pilot and had many hours flying the company’s airplane. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Bargmann Hunter; a son, Scott James Hunter (Cathy) of Oakland, CA; a daughter, Caroline H. Klein (Paul) of Walhalla, S.C.; two grandsons, Benjamin N. Hunter and Matthew A. Hunter both of Oakland. Other survivors include sisters, Daisy H. DesPortes of Columbia and Nathalie H. Cook of Kingstree and a brother, Eugene M. Hunter of Columbia. He was predeceased by sisters, Ella H. Davis of Mt. Pleasant and Caroline. H. Maass of Columbia.
