COLUMBIA – Funeral services for James Maxwell “Mac” Brooks, 92, will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Riverland Hills Baptist Church on Lake Murray Blvd. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements. Mr. Brooks was born September 1, 1918 in Columbia, SC and passed away on Sunday, June 26, 2011. He was a son of the late James Carl Brooks and Sadie Hill Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a member of the Lamp Lighters Sunday School Class. He worked for 42 years with Standard Parts Company. Mr. Brooks served in the United States Navy during World War II on the USS Iona, YTB-220 at Pearl Harbor. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the construction of Cheraw State Park. He was a loving and kind hearted man who will be missed greatly.
Mr. Brooks is survived by his wife, Helen Wenum Brooks of Columbia; daughter, Sylvia Hughes (Rudy) of Florence; son, James M. Brooks, Jr. (Phylis) of Irmo; grandchildren, Laurie Crouse (John) Jason Brooks (Charity), Jeffery Brooks (Danielle); step children, Richard Martin (Susan) of Lexington, Tracey Salisbury of Columbia and Carla Camp of Atlanta, GA; step grandchildren, Adam Martin and Joshua Salisbury; great-grandchild, Rivers Crouse; sisters, Juanita Pedersen of Columbia, Bernice “Bunny” Brooks of Columbia and Sadie Smoak (James) of Orangeburg. He was predeceased by his first wife, Hazel Carter Brooks and brother, J. C. Brooks. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Nursing and CNA Staff of National Health Care of Lexington for their compassionate care.
