He was predeceased by his parents Ralph Gottlieb, Ruth Gottlieb Moore, Raymond Moore, and sister Nancy Gottlieb Reeves. He is survived by his wife Ina Gottlieb, daughter and son-in-law Doctors Julie and Jonathan Fisher, son Ralph Gottlieb, grandchildren Noah, Jonas, Evelyn Fisher, and brother Joel Gottlieb.
Dr. Gottlieb graduated from Dreher High School, University of South Carolina, and Medical University of South Carolina. His medical training was interrupted by two years of service as captain in the US Air Force. He served in the Vietnam War and received the Bronze Star Medal for valor.
He opened his solo practice in Columbia in internal medicine in 1972. He had the privilege of caring for countless patients over the years, many of whom remained under his care until just weeks ago. His beloved staff were like daughters to him. He was a lifelong member of Beth Shalom Synagogue.
He had an abiding love for classical music, opera and Shakespeare. He was a lifelong student of science and history. He loved to travel, and his wanderlust took him all over the globe. In later years he took great pleasure in planning trips for family and friends. All these loves paled in comparison to the joy he took in his family.
He will be remembered for his warmth, his wit, his intelligence, his kindness and gentle presence.
In lieu of flowers please direct donations in his honor to the Free Medical Clinic, 1875 Harden Street, Columbia, SC 29204, so that his legacy of healing can continue.
