COLUMBIA - Master Sgt. Harry Eugene Boswell, Sr. (U.S. Army, Ret.), 93, died at home on Sunday, August 20, 2017. He was born June 7, 1924 in Decatur, IL to Harry William and Viva Idell White Boswell. He retired after 23 years from the U.S. Army where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant. He was wounded in WWII and was awarded the Purple Heart. During his military career, he was also awarded The National Defense Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, the Good Conduct Medal with 6 loops, three overseas service bars, the American Campaign Medal, the European, African, Middle Eastern ribbon with one silver star, the Army Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, and he was an expert rifleman. He was a member of the Purple Heart Chapter 402. With the chapter, he attended many Task Force Marshall deployments until his health started to decline. He was also a member of The Greater Columbia Bowling Association and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1992. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley DePaepe Boswell, and a son, Harry Eugene Boswell, Jr. He is survived by his children, William “Bob” Boswell and Steven Boswell, both of Columbia, SC, Dennis Boswell (Ana) of Rota, Spain, Cheryl Adams (Gary) of Huntsville, AL, and a stepdaughter, Susie Schmidgall of Morton, IL. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their families, Erin (great-grandson, Connor), Patrick (great-granddaughter, Jamie), Jennifer (great-grandson, Trey), Abby and Annie and step-children, Ana Francesca, David, and Isaac. The family would like to personally thank Dr. Alan Brett and Palmetto Health Hospice for their loving kindness and support. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 23, 2017 in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
