COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Georgene Hallman Tapp, 85, will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, December 5, 2015, at Shandon Presbyterian Church, with private burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 4, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Mrs. Tapp died Tuesday, December 1, 2015 at her daughter’s home in Charlotte. Born in Springfield, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Fred William and Onena Brodie Hallman. After graduating from Springfield High School in 1947 and attending Draughton’s Business College, she was Miss Columbia in 1952. Mrs. Tapp married William F. Tapp (Pete) in 1954. She was an active volunteer for the American Cancer Society serving as President, Crusade Chairman, Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chairman of Special Events for the Richland County Unit. She was a two time recipient of the Col. Finklea Award for Outstanding Volunteer of the Year. For the S.C. State Division of the ACS, she was the first female Crusade Chairman, served on the Public Education Team, the Income Development Team and was State Residential Chairman. Mrs. Tapp also served as Vice Chairman of the ACS National Residential Subcommittee. Some of her favorite pastimes included performing in the Red Stockings Review, modeling in the First Lady Fashion Show, and fellowship with friends in the many garden and bridge clubs she was a member. Her love for Shandon Presbyterian Church was expressed through worship, participation in Circle Groups, and various committees. Her greatest joy in life was her children and grandchildren. She and Pete never missed a football, basketball, baseball, softball, or Lacrosse game, tennis match or recital, regardless of the time, weather or distance. Her love for her family was immeasurable, unconditional and constant. Surviving are her son, William Franklin “Billy” Tapp III (Leslye) of Columbia; daughter, Georgene “Gena” Renfrow (Tom) of Charlotte, NC; four grandchildren, Krystin Walker (Chris), Pete Tapp, Regan Tapp, Mitch Renfrow and great granddaughter, Maggie Walker; brothers-in-law, Col. Richard Lee Tapp (Shirley), Thomas Tapp, and sisters-in-law, Marianna Finch and Ruby Moore (Woody). She was predeceased by her husband, William Franklin (Pete) Tapp, Jr.; siblings, Fred S. Hallman (Hattie), Stella Watts (Claude), Dorothy Moore (Woody), Sammy Hallman, O’Dowd Hallman (Loretta), Charles Hallman, and Robert Hallman.
