Mr. Stone died Sunday, January 24, 2021. Born in Williamston, SC, he was a son of John Byron Stone and Ruth Agnew Stone. He was a graduate of Wofford College, where he played baseball, and after college he served in the US Army. He worked as a salesman for Swift and Company Meat Packers for 40 years and later for L.R. Brown and Company. An active member of Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, he was a member of the Bauknight Sunday School Class and served on numerous committees. George, better known as “Deedah” to his grandchildren, was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and was an avid golfer and overall sports fan. He was a true southern Christian gentleman who loved and served the Lord Jesus Christ. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family, especially his four grandchildren. His friends and family will always remember him as a friendly, kind and joyful person.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Eliza Herndon Stone; sons, Thomas Herndon Stone (Sharon) of Gastonia, NC and George A. Stone, Jr. (Joy) of Columbia, SC; and grandchildren, Thomas Herndon Stone, Jr., Stephen Baker Stone, John Blalock Stone, and Ashley Eliza Ozmint (Luke).
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, John Byron Stone, Jr.
The family would like to thank Heart of Hospice, Caring Healthcare, as well as all the wonderful caregivers for their compassionate and loving care of George during the past year.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury Memorial United Methodist Church, 1005 Asbury Drive Columbia, SC 29209. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
