COLUMBIA Funeral service for George Shields King, U.S. Navy Captain (Ret.), 76, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 11, 2014, at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, with burial with full military rites in Elmwood Cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Mr. King died Sunday, December 7, 2014. He was born on January 24, 1938, son of Anna Davis King (deceased) and George Shields King Sr. (deceased) of Columbia, South Carolina. George grew up in Columbia, attended public schools and was an Eagle Scout. Scouting had a profound impact on his life. George attended the University of South Carolina and graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Naval ROTC and a member of Kappa Alpha Order. After graduation George was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy and served a tour of duty aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt (CVA-42). George remained in the Navy Reserves and retired after twenty three years of service to his country as a Naval Captain. Many of his friends and family and all of his grandsons called him Captain. George started his business career in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Stanton, Virginia working for Westinghouse. He returned to South Carolina and joined the South Carolina National Bank. He worked for the South Carolina National Bank/Wachovia in various management positions for the next twenty seven years. While in banking George received his Master’s in Banking degree from the Graduate School of Banking at Louisiana State University and was active for many years in various civic organizations including the Columbia Rotary Club, Columbia Chamber of Commerce and the United Way. George retired from banking and then spent seven years developing and managing a nationwide data processing business firm owned by the STAR ATM Network headquartered in Orlando, Florida. George was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Forest Lake Club and the Columbia Oyster Club. George is survived by his wife Carolyn; son, George Shields King Jr., (Beatrice), son, John Fitzhugh King (Jessica); daughter, Katherine King Schanz (Adam); and six grandsons, George III, Charlie, William, Fitzhugh, Means and Henry. He was predeceased by his sister, Shields King Warren of Greenville, South Carolina and Pirinoa, New Zealand.
