COLUMBIA - Frederick Hampton Alvey passed away Friday, February 25, 2022. Hamp was born on July 5, 1924 in Catharpin, Virginia, son of the late J.W. Alvey and Pearl Sanders Alvey. He was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the University of South Carolina School of Law. Hamp was predeceased by his loving wife of 74 years Irving Rion Alvey (Doodie) of Columbia. WWII interrupted his college years; joining the Marine Corps Hamp fought and was wounded on lwo Jima. At the end of WWII he completed college and upon graduation he received a commission in the United States Army Reserves. He was subsequently called to active duty during the Korean War. He saw combat again as an infantry officer and was wounded by small arms fire while on patrol with his platoon. At the end of his military service, Hamp had been awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action as well as two Bronze Stars with Valor, two Purple Hearts and many other service ribbons.
After law school, Hamp had a 20 year career as a special agent in the FBI. Upon his retirement he had a varied and active life. He was a prosecuting attorney for the 5th Judicial Circuit in Columbia and then formed an investigative firm, finally culminating in his opening and running The Book Place in Columbia, SC. A life long lover of books, Hamp became well known and respected in the book community. Throughout his life, Hamp was known as cheerful, upbeat and full of good humor. A loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, he will be greatly missed.
Hamp is survived by three sons: Frederick H. Alvey Jr., Aubrey Randolph Alvey (Hazel), Holbrook Rion Alvey (Jenny); eight grandchildren: Ellie Alvey, Brook Alvey, Brandt Alvey, Laura Wethington (Jess), Sarah Adame (Sam), Ashley Ingalls (Trey), Brittany Steed (AJ) and Tripp Williams; five great grandchildren: Brooks Ingalls, Fitz Ingalls, Hamp Ingalls, Brody Steed, and Tucker Steed.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Lake Wateree Baptist Church, 5856 River Rd, Ridgeway, SC 29130.
