COLUMBIA Dr. Frank Douglas “Doug” McDonald, 83, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 14, 2015, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 15, 1932, in Cookeville, TN, to the late Frank Thurston and Flora Harris McDonald. He graduated from Howard High School in Nashville, TN, and received a Bachelor degree at Middle Tennessee State University before entering the United States Army. He went on to receive a Master’s degree from Vanderbilt University and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Oklahoma. After beginning his career in audiology in Memphis, TN, Doug served as Chief of Audiology and Speech Pathology at the VA Hospital in Columbia, SC, from 1970 until his retirement in 1990. He was past-president of both the SC Speech and Hearing Association and the Robert Byrnes Society. Doug enjoyed life to the fullest, singing in the 1950s quartet The Martels, traveling the world throughout his life with his best friend and wife Betty, sharing with others his love for music, art, and the outdoors, and spending time with his beloved children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Betty; four children, Valerie McDonald Tallon, Melinda McDonald Postal, and Sandra McDonald Wrenn of Columbia, SC, and Kevin Frank McDonald of Greenville, SC; grandchildren: Damon and Jordan Postal; Jack, Julia, and Sam McDonald; and Court, Hayden, Summer, and Gage Wrenn; and a sister, Joyce Rice and nephew, Ron Rice of Franklin, TN, as well as many other family and friends.
Visitation will be at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, on Sunday, October 18 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Burial will be in Fort Jackson National Cemetery on Monday, October 18, at 10 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Epworth Children’s Home, Wounded Warrior Project, or a charity of one’s choosing.
