COLUMBIA A service celebrating the life of Elizabeth Siemers Moorer, 92, will be held Friday, November 14, 2014 at 4:00 pm, at Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, 3401 Trenholm Road, Columbia, S.C. A visitation and reception will be held at the church immediately following the service. A graveside service will be held for the family at the St. George Cemetery in St. George, S.C., on Saturday. Mrs. Moorer passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, November 13, 2014. Born in Charleston, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John D. and Sophie Behlmer Siemers. She graduated from Memminger High School and the College of Charleston. Elizabeth worked at the Medical College in Charleston where she met and later married Dr. Dan F. Moorer. In the early years of their marriage, Dan’s medical training took them to Baltimore, Md., and Cincinnati, Ohio, before returning to South Carolina. They raised their five children in the small town of Latta. From Girl Scouts to Boy Scouts, church member to school volunteer, she was very much involved in nurturing the lives of her children. During the 1980’s, Mrs. Moorer was very active in the Florence, S.C. Alzheimer’s Support Group. Her personal experience as the wife and caregiver of an Alzheimer’s patient, gave her a voice as an advocate for families struggling to provide for their own loved ones impacted by the disease. Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Dan F. Moorer, Elizabeth moved to Columbia to be closer to her five children and six grandchildren. One of her greatest joys was her grandchildren. When asked about her hobbies, Elizabeth would always reply: painting water colors, playing bridge, reading and “grand mothering”. She became “Memaw” to everyone who knew her. Elizabeth loved flowers and always had color in her garden and fresh flowers in her home. Her tenacity in life mimics her most favorite flower, the sunflower. A quote from a Tim Firth movie script so aptly describes her character and drive throughout her life. “I don't think there's anything on this planet that more trumpets life than the sunflower. For me that's because of the reason behind its name. Not because it looks like the sun but because it follows the sun. During the course of the day, the head tracks the journey of the sun across the sky. A satellite dish for sunshine. Wherever light is, no matter how weak, these flowers will find it. And that's such an admirable thing. And such a lesson in life." A member of Trenholm Road United Methodist Church, Elizabeth was blessed with many great friendships from her church family. The family would like to express thanks to those friends who so lovingly supported Mrs. Moorer through thought, prayer and personal contact. Thank you to neighbors, Dr. John Gould, Palmetto Health Homecare and Palmetto Health Hospice. And, the family would like to extend special heartfelt thanks to the team of caregivers who through their love and dedication became extended family members in the home. We love you and are fortunate to have you in our lives during this difficult time. Known for her grace and beautiful smile, Elizabeth will be missed by all who knew her. Preceded in death by her sisters, Helen Louise Siemers and Margaret Kathryn Siemers. Mrs. Moorer is survived by her children, Elizabeth M. Wolff (David), D. F. Moorer, Jr., John D. Moorer, Nancy A. Moorer and Jennifer M. Taylor (Jimmy), all of Columbia; grandchildren, Jason Andrews of Nashville, Tenn., Annie Andrews (Travis Poole) of Charleston, S.C., Elizabeth T. Guerry (Russell) of Orcas Island, Wash., David Wolff (Katie) of Denver, Colo., John Wolff of San Francisco and Eliza W. Bostian (Jay) of Greenville, S.C.; great-grandson, Ryan T.
