A private service for Elizabeth “Betty” McElveen Allison, 96, will be held at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral with interment in the church cemetery. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is in charge. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 140 Stoneridge Drive, #640 Columbia, SC 29210 or a charity of one's choice. Mrs. Allison died peacefully on Wednesday, March 9, 2022. She born in 1925 in Lake City, South Carolina and was the daughter of Robert Henry McElveen and Susan Cockfield McElveen.
After receiving a BA degree from Winthrop University, she married the late James Richard Allison, Jr, MD (“Dick”). Dr. and Mrs. Allison raised four children. Their faith in the Lord and deep love for each other was evident throughout the years. Mrs. Allison’s sense of humor, family meals, large Sunday dinners around the dining room table, and open door to extended family, friends, and children’s friends made home a wonderful place to be. She was a member of Trinity Cathedral and served in a variety of capacities including president of The Daughters of the Holy Cross.
Surviving Mrs. Allison are her children James Richard Allison, III (Pam), Ann FitzSimons Allison (Bill) Robert McElveen Allison (Crystal) and Elizabeth Huger Allison; grandchildren James Richard Allison, IV (Francesca), Benjamin Dunkin Allison, Elizabeth McElveen Allison, Grace Whitener Lee, George Marion Lee, IV, Nathaniel McElveen Allison, Christine Allison Scott (Tim), and Elizabeth Allison Duncan; four great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Allison was predeceased by her brother Robert H. McElveen and her son-in-law Robert Lee Duncan, the husband of Elizabeth Huger Allison.
The family extends their gratitude to Heart of Hospice, all staff and people at Still Hopes who loved and cared for their mother, especially to Rickie Smith, who went above and beyond for many years to care for Mrs. Allison with loving words and deeds to ensure her comfort and peace of mind and body. Rickie, we will always remember you with a thankful heart.
