Dunbar Funeral Home, in Columbia, South Carolina, is assisting the family locally.
Eileen was born on August 11, 1933, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to the late John Edward Martin and Florence Valentine Martin. Eileen grew up in Pittsburgh, where she met and married her husband of 55 years, Walter Glamp. Their sons, Peter, Paul, Patrick, and Philip were born there spending their early childhood in Pennsylvania before the family moved to Maryland, where they had their fifth child, daughter Mary Beth. After living in Maryland for 35+ years, Eileen and Walter moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 2006.
Eileen “Granny” Glamp was a wonderful storyteller and conversationalist, charming family, friends, and acquaintances alike with her sharp wit and unforgettable, and often hilariously told, life stories. In her earlier years, she could be found gallivanting with her brothers at the local rec center and sports field or adventuring around Pittsburgh with friends. Following the birth of her children, she became a fixture at high school and college sporting events as her four boys became outstanding athletes with many accomplishments in wrestling and football. Many years were spent traveling to games and matches, cheering the boys on as they competed in wrestling and football, first in High School, then in college at the University of Maryland and Temple University. After retiring, Eileen spent the next part of her life in the company of a very close group of girlfriends who provided a wealth of good times and adventures. They stood by her for many years and gave her the strength to navigate the tragic and unexpected passing of her granddaughter, Mackenzie, and her sons, Paul, Peter and Patrick. Not having much opportunity or time to travel in her earlier years, she enjoyed frequent trips to visit her daughter, Mary Beth, and her growing family during their years spent in Texas, Germany and California, before settling down in South Carolina.
Eileen’s greatest love was spending time with her large family - hosting weekly family dinners, family game nights, summer family trips to the beach and visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Having grown up during the Golden Age of Hollywood, she had an incredible knowledge and love of cinema. During one of her visits to Los Angeles and Grauman’s Chinese Theatre, she was challenged and succeeded in identifying each obscure movie star whose hand/footprints/signatures were impressed in the cement - along with the movies they starred in! She especially loved history, war films and westerns…and Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing. She was a longtime member of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in Maryland and subsequently, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Columbia, South Carolina. In addition to the peace and joy she found in attending mass, it was her faith that gave her strength and comfort while enduring so many losses in her life. She will forever be remembered for her wicked wit, generosity, gift of gab, veracious spirit, and ferocious love for her family and friends.
She is survived by her two children, Philip Walter (Renee) Glamp and Mary Beth (Brian) Payne; nine grandchildren, Lindsey Morgan Beeler, Zachary Tyler Glamp, Jessica Valentine Woodworth, Jacqueline Marie Willey, Savannah Renee Johnson, Rachael Mariah Glamp, Sophie Louise Miskelly, Leo James Miskelly, and Miles Martin Miskelly; seven great-grandchildren; one step grandchild, Morelli Ann Payne; and very best friend, whom she often referred to as a sister, Barbara Loch. She was predeceased by her husband Walter Edward Glamp; three sons, Peter James Glamp, Paul Joseph Glamp, and Patrick James Glamp; and granddaughter Avin Mackenzie Glamp.
