Dodie was born in Cottonwood, Alabama, daughter of David Mitchell Kirkland and Bernice Goodman Kirkland. She spent most of her childhood in Queens, New York, but she and her family returned to Alabama when she was 14. She graduated from Dothan High School, and was a graduate of the University of Alabama, with degrees in Nursing and Anesthesia. She was married to Dr. James H. Weston in 1957, and they settled in Columbia in 1960.
She practiced her art of anesthesia for many years, in hospitals throughout the Midlands, including Columbia, Lexington, Sumter, Camden, Winnsboro, Orangeburg, and Chester. She belonged to two bridge clubs, each of which remained active for 30 years or more. She was an accomplished watercolorist and received numerous awards for her paintings.
She was an active member of St. John’s Episcopal Church at Congaree, S. C., and was chairmen of the ECW.
She is survived by her husband, her son Buck Weston and his wife Jill, her daughter Amy Yarbrough and her husband Stan, and her grandson Connor Weston, all of Columbia. She was predeceased by a brother, David Kirkland of San Diego, CA and a sister, Anne Schnedler of Medford, Oregon.
An outdoor service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Congaree, at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020, with visitation following the ceremony. Masks and separation are recommended.
