COLUMBIA - A memorial service for Cy Robert Wentworth, 78, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A reception will follow the service at the funeral home. Burial will be at 1:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2025, in Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
Cy passed away on Saturday, February 15, 2025, after a long battle with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Born in Weehawken, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Walter Howard Wentworth and Evelyn Bartlett Wentworth. He grew up in Haddon Heights, NJ, where he graduated from Haddon Heights High School. A natural athlete, Cy had a deep love for sports, especially baseball. After high school, he joined the U.S. Army and was stationed in Korea, where he had the honor of playing baseball for his division.
Following his service, Cy built a long and dedicated career in human resources, working for several South Carolina state agencies, including the SC Department of Social Services, the SC Forestry Commission, and the SC Judicial Department. He loved working in human resources because it gave him the opportunity to work directly with people and help them better themselves—something he cared about deeply.
Cy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife, Patty Wright Wentworth; his beloved children, Dirk Burris (Kimmie), Ty Wentworth (Monica), and Woodie Wentworth (Nino); and his grandchildren, Krystal Young, Rian Burris, Karmyn Wentworth, Kylie Wentworth, Chloe Wentworth, Quinn Wentworth, and Ty Wentworth II; and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Young and Kayleigh Young. He is also survived by his brother, Howard Wentworth (Barbara), and his sister, Helen Hurff (Burt), along with many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and his cherished niece, Laura Forte. Cy deeply valued family and considered his sisters- and brothers-in-law as his own: Regina Duncan, Brenda and Bob Farris, and Ken and Rita Wright.
Cy loved good music, storytelling, making people laugh, and an ice cold Miller Lite. His outlook on life was simple yet profound: have fun, be kind and always count your blessings. He sought to find the best in every situation and every person he met. His warmth and humor will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Cy’s caregivers—Doris Smalls, Birdie Mae Cyrus, Carolyn Martin, Beth Wright, and Stephanie High—for their kindness and unwavering support. They would also like to extend their sincere appreciation to Dr. Davis and the staff at E. Roy Stone Veterans Nursing Home for their compassionate care.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Georgia Hoffman (husband Al) and Evelyn Lake (husband Jack), as well as his brothers-in-law, Derald Wright (wife Janet) and Mike Duncan.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you honor Cy’s memory by being kind, sharing a laugh, and embracing life with gratitude—just as he always did.
