Born December 27, 1930, in Conway, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Ed Thomas Todd and Hazel Victoria Bellamy Todd. In addition to his wife, Tina, he is survived by his four children, Teri Todd Hanson (Joe Hanson), Gregory Bryan Todd (Rhonda Todd), Lauri Todd Truesdale (Jody Truesdale), and Marc Stephan Todd (Teri Todd); nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren with a ninth on the way. Additionally, he is survived by many nieces and nephews, from both sides of the family, that loved Uncle Carl. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister Annie-Sue Martin.
Inspired by his favorite chapter in the Bible—1 Corinthians 13, the Love Chapter—Carl’s legacy is one of love, patience, and faithfulness. Carl was a humble servant of God, a loving husband and father, and a committed member of the community.
For almost 30 years, Carl served in the United States Army – both as active duty and in the reserves. As a young lieutenant, he served as a platoon leader in the Korean war and upon returning home he worked his way to becoming a Colonel and Assistant Division Commander of Training at Fort Jackson. Alongside his long career with the U.S. Army Reserves, Carl joined the sales team at Hancock Buick where he worked diligently to provide the community with an honest sales experience.
As if born ready to meet his Lord, everything Carl did was in service to Him. As such, Carl’s life was one of humility and service and left a meaningful impression upon everyone he met. An active member of Forest Lake Presbyterian Church for 56 years, Carl served in numerous leadership roles in the church including deacon and elder, taught Sunday school for many decades, and sat on several committees to facilitate the growth of the church.
In addition to being involved in the church, Carl was a 51-year member of the local Lions Club where he served as chapter president, board member, and Leo club advisor. In addition to serving in leadership roles, he could often be seen selling brooms and collecting eyeglasses for those in need.
Captivated at first sight and married in 1952, Carl was the devoted husband of Tina for 70 years. Throughout their marriage, Carl and Tina enjoyed traveling abroad and visited countless countries and developed a fondness for cruises. In addition to travel, they also were avid South Carolina Gamecock football fans and served as ushers for many years – cheering for them right until the very end.
The funeral service will take place in the Sanctuary of Forest Lake Presbyterian at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, December 8, 2022 followed by a brief Columbarium service in the church’s garden. There will be a brief reception and greeting of the family after the services. For those that would like, a memorial can be given to Forest Lake Presbyterian Church in Carl’s name, 6500 N Trenholm Rd, Columbia, SC 29206.
