COLUMBIA Funeral service for Charles Patton Poole Jr., 88, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 5, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in St. Peter’s Cemetery. The Liturgy for the Dead will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with visitation following until 8:00 p.m. Dr. Poole died Sunday, November 1, 2015. Born June 7, 1927, in Panama City, Panama, he was the son of the late Charles Patton Poole Sr. and Irene Hackett Poole. A retired physics professor at U.S.C., he received a BS in PreMed from Fordham University in 1950 and an MS in Physics in 1952. He obtained a Ph.D. in Solid State Physics from the University of Maryland. After Charles obtained his master’s degree, he took a job at Westinghouse designing microwave components for radar. During his doctoral studies, he participated in the design of an electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer. After receiving his doctorate, he spent six years using ESR in the related field of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) at the Gulf Oil Research Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. During his lifetime, he published 150 research articles and numerous books in his field. He served as an ordained deacon at St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Newman Center in Columbia. He is survived by five children, fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren: by Kathleen Poole with children, Noah, Clemens and Araminta; by Charles Patton Poole III with wife, Karen, and children, Ashley, Chelsey, Torey and Courtney Pendergrast with husband, Joe; by Michael Poole with wife, Suzan, and daughter, Kim Duncan; by Mary Ellen Jackson with husband, Thomas, and children, John Paul, Jude, Mary Therese and Catherine Anne; and Elizabeth Loeffler with husband, Andrew, and children, Caitlin, Carolyn and Mark. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife of 51 years, Kathleen, on November 10, 2004 and by his sister, Nancy Hartigan on December 1, 1997. Memorials may be made to S.C.
