COLUMBIA Charles T. “Charlie” Hall was born on July 1, 1929 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the son of the late Charles Ernest Hall and Edith Dolan Hall. Charlie passed away on June 25, 2023 in Columbia, SC, just a week shy of his 94th birthday.
After graduating from Sparrows Point High School in Baltimore, Maryland at the age of 16 in 1946, Charlie enlisted in the United States Army. He spent most of the next three years in Korea as an Army medic.
Charlie returned to the United States in 1949 and enrolled at the University of Maryland. He was the first in his family to have the opportunity to go to college, and he made the most of it. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology in 1954. Life was so good at the University of Maryland that Charlie continued his studies and, ultimately, received his Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1962. Charlie also met the love of his life, Shelby, at the University of Maryland and they married in 1962.
Charlie worked as a research microbiologist at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia for more than 25 years, while he and Shelby raised three children. Shelby led Brownie troops and served in the PTA while Charlie was busy coaching youth baseball and football teams. After retirement, Charlie taught classes as an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina.
Charlie was a man of many interests and talents. He was a poet, an artist, a musician, and, most of all, a scientist. He loved classical music, sports, photography, history, a good hot dog, and his favorite team – Baltimore’s “real” football team – the Colts!
Charlie is predeceased by his parents and his beloved sisters – Marie, Sally, and Betty.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shelby; sons, Charles A. “Chuck” Hall (Heather) and Kevin A. Hall (Darren); daughter, Colleen H. Anderson (Scott); his grandkids, Mary Katherine Phillips (George), Callie Bittle (John), Sam Hall, Lizzie Hall, Spenser Anderson, Jon Anderson, Abby Hall and Allie Hall; great-granddaughter Katherine Phillips; nephew, Jeff Humphreys (Dee) and niece Peggy Ruiz Marquez. Charlie is also survived by many other nieces and nephews.
A family service will be held at the National Cemetery Fort Jackson, SC on Friday, June 30, 2023, at 10:00 am.
Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300 Jacksonville, FL 32256.
