COLUMBIA - Charles “Charlie” Cobb of Columbia, SC, was born October 1, 1954 in Stuttgart, Germany and passed away on October 15, 2023, surrounded by family. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Taylor Cobb. Charlie graduated from Spring Valley High School and went on to become a sales consultant for Joe Henry Company, eventually starting his own business, CE&E, LLC.
Charlie was involved in Palmetto Baseball League for over 30 years, beginning in the early 1970s. Starting as an umpire at the Carolina Children’s Home, he held many positions within the league including coaching, managing the grill, and serving as League President.
His devotion and passion for baseball and coaching encouraged an enjoyment of the game, imparting a love of the sport in those that he coached throughout the years. His former players and those involved with Palmetto Baseball League affectionately refer to Charlie as “Coach Cobb” still to this day.
In addition to his love of baseball, Charlie enjoyed golfing with friends, leading him to organize an annual golf trip to Santee for the past 20 years. This was a time for fellowship, telling jokes and stories, playing golf, and of course drinking a “few” beers.
Most of all, Charlie loved being “Big Poppy” to his 5 grandchildren. Charlie and his oldest grandson, Cooper, shared a weekly Sunday call to talk about what mattered most; sports.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, David and Annie Cobb. He is survived by his wife, Vicki Cobb; his children Christie Jameson (John) and Charles Cobb (Lindsay); his grandchildren Cooper Jameson, Everette Jameson, Emmie Jameson, Luke Cobb, and Claire Cobb; and his siblings David Cobb (Marsha), Loretta Cobb (Cheryl) and Christina Hunter (Michael).
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 20, 2023 starting with a visitation at 1:00pm, followed by a funeral service at 2:00pm all at Dunbar Funeral Home, 3926 Devine Street, Columbia, SC 29205.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or the charity of one’s choice.
