COLUMBIA - Carolyn Carmontry Bates “CC” Talbert was called to her Heavenly home on Christmas Day, 2018. Carolyn was born August 2, 1965 in Bad Kreuznach, West Germany. She was the daughter of LTG (R) Jared Lewis Bates and Patricia Beach Greene Bates of Williamsburg, VA. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Larry Carlton Talbert, Jr. and their three sons, PO 3rd Class Braden Collins Talbert of Oceana Naval Base, VA., Garrett Cassidy Talbert and Trey Carlton Talbert of the home; brothers, Matthew David Bates of High Point, N.C. and CDR (R) Justin Trevor Bates (CDR Lyndsi Lamkin Bates) of Belleview, WA.; niece, Noelle Sophia Bates; and nephews, Joshua Stanford Bates, Jaxon McCarty Bates and Jonathan Charles Bates all of Belleview, WA. Also surviving are her father and mother-in-law, Larry Carlton Talbert, Sr. and Helen Denny Talbert; sisters-in-law, Cindy Talbert Vainright (Howard) and their children, Hunter Talbert Vainright and Colten Robert Vainright all of Greenville, N.C., and Pam Leigh Talbert and her children, Kristen Michelle Thompson of Lewisville, TX and Kate Thompson Sowards (Michael) of Hawaii.
Carolyn graduated from Wurzburg American High School in 1983, where she was on the Wurzburg Wolves Pom Pom Team. She graduated from North Carolina State University in 1988 with a double major in business management and economics. She was a beautiful Christian and an active member of her church, Shandon United Methodist, where she was a member of the Stephen Ministry group, played handbells and was an assistant pre-school teacher. She also played a clown for the ministry to children in the hospital. Carolyn loved running and ran in seven marathons, including the NYC and Marine Corps Marathons. Her last marathon was in Chicago in October of 2017 to celebrate her 30 years as a cancer survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, with her time coming in at 6 hours, 1 minute and 37 seconds. Carolyn served as past president of Columbia Junior Women’s Club and served on various boards including Palmetto Place, a children’s shelter. She learned to snow ski in Austria and water ski in upstate New York. She played a mouse in the Nutcracker Ballet and loved the sandy beach, but not the ocean. She always said, “I’m not going in the Sharks House.” Carolyn played the baby grand piano of her mother and grandmother and was an accomplished seamstress, who made her trousseau.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2018 at Shandon United Methodist Church, with a reception following the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family.
