COLUMBIA – A memorial service for Carlton Keith Dennis, 69, of Orangeburg, will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, 2019, at North United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following the service. A military honors ceremony will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery with inurnment to follow in honor of his service in the US Marine Corp, where he earned a National Medal of Honor and was a Rifle Marksman. Those wishing to attend must arrive no later than 2:30 p.m. to join the processional.
Mr. Dennis was born October 10, 1949 in Salisbury, NC, and passed away on Friday, April 5, 2019. He was a son of the late Ruth Swicegood and Floyd Taft Dennis. Mr. Dennis was a faithful member of North United Methodist Church. He was President of Comm Technologies, a computer technology firm he started in 1998. Mr. Dennis had worked with computers and technology for the majority of his life, starting in the Marines. He worked with NASA at Cape Canaveral developing software for the space shuttle program, banking firms in the Northeast to develop new computer programs for customers, and several counties across the eastern seaboard setting up new online county payroll and administrative systems.
Mr. Dennis was an avid golfer and played with the Senior Golf Circuit in Orangeburg before his health declined. He was a Gamecock football fan, a lover of Harley Davidson Motorcycles (at one time he had 4), sang along to any Hank Williams Junior song, and made the best BBQ sauce you ever tasted.
Mr. Dennis is survived by his loving wife, Lorene W. Dennis, who he loved with all his heart; daughters, Troyce Dennis Docherty and Katie Dennis Hall (Matt); sisters, Doris Hall of Orangeburg, SC, Sherrell Hedrick of Lexington, NC, and Gayle Prentice (Rick) of Spencer, NC; sisters-in-law, Virginia Dennis of Catonsville, MD, Carol Holton (Renny) of Statesville, NC, Kay Wall (Jim) of Concord, NC, and Christine Bralley (Terry) of Mocksville, NC; mother-in-law, Agnes Wooten; grandchildren, John-Paul Docherty (Tiffany); Mary-Catherine Docherty; Jeanne-Marie Docherty and Annabella Gene Hall; great-grandchild, Aria Marie Docherty, as well as many loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise Walser and brother, Slate Dennis.
In lieu of flowers, memorials in his honor may be made to Warriors Walk Hospice, who provided dignity and honor in his last days, by sending a donation to the Dorn VA Medical Center, 6439 Garners Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209 Attention: Volunteer Services. Donations may also be made to North United Methodist Church at 8301 Salley Road, North, SC 29112.
