COLUMBIA - Lt. Col. Bruce R. Volk, Sr. U.S. Army (Ret.) died Thursday, March 19, 2015. Born in West New York, N.J., he was a son of the late John G. Volk and Naomi Marie Hewke Volk. Lt. Col. Volk retired from the U.S. Army after serving his country for twenty three years, which included serving in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War. His distinguished military service included both a Bronze Star with valor and a Purple Heart. Lt. Col. Volk was also a member of the Shriners Club and was treasurer of the Columbia Touchdown Club for ten years. He also officiated many high school football games all over the world at the highest levels including several state championships, as well as officiating for the USC Gamecocks. Lt. Col. Volk was the owner and president of Bruce Volk & Assoc. Real Estate Appraisals and Consultant firm for thirty five years, served on the National Association of Real Estate Appraisers Board as well as the South Carolina Realtors Association. He was a lifetime member of St. Michael & All Angels’ Episcopal Church. Surviving are his devoted wife of thirty years, Sara “Beebie” Volk; sons, Bruce R. Volk, Jr. of Camden, Dusty Dial, Jr. of Columbia; daughter, Kimberly Raulerson of Columbia; nine grandchildren; a beloved brother, Robert H. Volk of Seminole, Fla.; and his faithful Jack Russell, Little Buddy. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a daughter, Carol Ann Bailey. As a husband, father and grandfather, he was our rock, our strength and our leader to the very end. We love you and will miss you each and every day of our life. We also wish to thank Father Philip Whitehead for his steadfast care and companionship over the years. A private graveside service with full U.S. Army Honors will be held to celebrate Lt. Col. Volk’s life at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
