Funeral services will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 9, 2020 at Shandon Baptist Church with Pastor Dennis Banks officiating. Burial will immediately follow at Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm until 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 8, 2020 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.
Betty was born April 14, 1932 in Columbia to the late Howard and Johnnie Mae Perry Emerson. She retired after 25 years of service with the Employment Security Commission. Betty was a devoted and lifelong member of Shandon Baptist Church, she served as secretary in the Sunday School Class. A coffee connoisseur, known as the ring leader of the Rose Garden Golden Girls at Still Hopes. Betty was full of life, enjoyed a good laughed and making others laugh as well.
In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her husbands, Joe Long, Jr. and Roy E. Smith; sisters, Derelle Bigby, Agnes McDonald and Joy Emerson; and brothers, Howard Emerson, Jr., Richard Emerson and Ben Emerson.
Survivors include her sons, Joe Long (Karol) of West Columbia and Mike Long of Houston, TX; sister, Hedy Webster of West Columbia; two grandchildren, Kurt Long (Rhonda) of Chelsea, AL, Nikki James of West Columbia; three great-grandchildren, Kaelyn, Ace, Mia; three step-children, Robin Smith Thomas Bessent (Tom) of Folly Beach, Marcia Smith Little of Charleston, and W.H. Mac Smith of Tennessee; and many nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to her caregivers at Still Hopes.
