Barry passed away peacefully Sunday, November 11, 2018 with his beloved wife by his side. Born in Salisbury, NC, he was the son of the late Arthur Julian Brantley and Mamie Glen Brantley. For 59 wonderful years, Marion Katherine “Kathy” Baughman Brantley, was blessed to call him her loving husband. Mr. Brantley was a strong believer in the Lord and a devoted member and chairman of the Deacons at Shandon Baptist Church. During his time at Shandon, Barry was a Sunday School teacher, a friend to all who entered the church doors, and a member of the finance and personnel committees.
Barry served in the United States Air Force Reserves as a medic. He thoroughly enjoyed participating in various types of surgeries and medical procedures as a part of his service to his country. Barry attended the University of South Carolina and made his career after school as a real estate developer in North and South Carolina. He designed and built the Challenge Golf Club in Graham NC. Barry was one of the first real estate developers in the country to design and build college game day condos including the Stadium Village Lofts in the shadows of William Brice Stadium. Barry was an avid Gamecock Fan and a Gamecock Full Scholar Club Member, attending most home and many away games for over 50 years.
Barry enjoyed and loved life. He loved God first, and his family and friends second. He loved people well and had a full and complete life. Barry enjoyed vacationing at the beach with family, fishing and playing golf. He loved to tell stories and making those around him laugh. He often told the story of being offered a ride by Judy Garland during a torrential rain storm while visiting New York City.
