Artie graduated Cum Laude from Baptist College at Charleston receiving his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He attended the University of South Carolina where he received his Master of Accountancy. After graduation, he worked at Price Waterhouse in Columbia, SC. From there, he worked as an Audit Manager for CPA’s in Savannah, GA. Artie worked as an Accounting Manager for KEMIRA until 1988. He then worked at Atlantic Wood Industries for 13 years as the CFO and Treasurer. In 2001 he moved to Columbia, SC to take a job as Controller of Wilbur Smith Associates. Artie also worked as the Controller at the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce for a couple years before he became the CFO at Southern Tank Transport until 2020.
Artie was a man of many interests and hobbies including reading books about history and religion, playing golf, listening to music, especially Jazz and vinyl records, and playing the clarinet. His love of music extended to playing with the Congaree New Horizons Concert and Jazz Bands. Artie also loved to travel and see other parts of the world including Cuba, Greece, Portugal, Ireland, and Spain. In recent years, he enjoyed a trip out west to see the Grand Canyon, went to Mardi Gras in New Orleans and several family beach trips in between.
Another one of his great interests and passions was volunteer work. He was actively involved at Shandon Presbyterian Church where he served as an Elder and on numerous committees including Outreach and More Justice. Artie was passionate about his volunteer work with organizations such as Family Promise, the Girl Scouts, the SC Philharmonic, having served as a board member and officer for over seven years. He was also the President of the Columbia Chapter of Institute of Management Accountants as well as a member of the Board of Trustees at St. Andrew’s School for several years. Artie enjoyed growing and learning throughout his entire life, and recently was taking a Spanish class at the University of South Carolina.
Artie met and fell in love with Lucie in Charleston, SC. They married in Columbia and in 1981 moved to Savannah, GA to build a life and raise a family together. During this time, he and Lucie had two daughters, Emily and Catherine. Eventually settling into the lake house on Lake Murray where he and Lucie loved to visit, which would become their forever home. He was a joy to be around and had a wonderful sense of humor and always brought a smile to those around him. Artie loved his family deeply. He enjoyed spending family time together at their lake house, from boating to birthdays and holidays and so many memorable special occasions. One of his greatest sources of joy in life were his three grandchildren, Lydia, Emmett Jr. and Mia. He was an ever-present figure in their lives and the stamp he left on them will last a lifetime. He treasured being actively involved in their lives by attending recitals, taking them boating, and being their biggest cheerleader in the various sports they played. He absolutely adored his newest grandchild Amelia Mae (Mia) and took delight in watching her learn new things and was always the best at rocking her to sleep.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur T. Hughes and Lydia Hughes. He is survived by wife Lucie Hughes, daughters Emily Hughes and Catherine Nolan, and grandchildren, Lydia and Emmett Jr. Nolan and Amelia Mae Crawford. He is also survived by his two brothers Mike and David Hughes.
A memorial service will be held at Shandon Presbyterian Church on Saturday, November 19th at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to two of Artie’s favorite charities, The American Red Cross and Doctors without Borders.
