Mrs. McArthur died February 13, 2018, after a brief illness. Born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on February 24, 1925, she was the daughter of John Galloway Barron and Sara Strong Barron. She was educated at Winthrop Training School from nursery school through high school. She received her BA degree from Erskine College in 1945. While working at the Chase Manhattan Bank, Anne met her future husband Currie in New York City in 1946. She began teaching at Darlington High School in 1947, where Currie served as the elementary school principal. They began courting in Darlington and were married June 18, 1949. They returned to New York City where Currie completed his doctoral work, and Anne worked in the Admissions Office at Columbia University.
Anne, Currie and family lived in Orangeburg, Beaufort and Sumter, where Currie served first as an assistant superintendent and then as superintendent of schools. Anne and Currie raised their children in Sumter. Anne enjoyed playing golf and tennis. Her children loved to watch sports with her, and marveled at her understanding of the intricacies of team strategy.
Currie took a position at Furman University in 1974. Anne and Currie lived near the campus for 25 years and enjoyed their association with faculty and students.
Anne was a faithful Christian and active in church activities. Among many activities, she served as chair of the Women of the Church, church circle leader and Bible moderator at First Presbyterian Church of Sumter and in the latter two capacities at First Presbyterian Church of Greenville.
Anne and Currie loved playing bridge with friends. In retirement years they traveled widely, visiting parts of Europe several times as well as China, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the western United States. In 2000 Anne and Currie moved to Wildewood Downs in Columbia, where they enjoyed many friendships.
Anne is survived by her sons, Reverend Laurin Currie McArthur, III (Nancy) and John Barron McArthur (Barbara) and by son-in-law Kenneth Lowell Shigley.
