COLUMBIA - Ann Margaret Cooney, 91, passed away at home on Sunday, March 13, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late James Edward Cooney. Born in New Bedford, MA, she was the daughter of the late Emile Louis Keroack and Grace Mahoney. In 1952, she married the love of her life and happily raised her family in York, New York. She attended Boston University and later received her teaching degree from SUNY Geneseo. She moved to Sumter, S.C. in 1980, and was a devoted kindergarten teacher at Mayesville Elementary School until 1997. After retirement she focused on her numerous young grandchildren and traveled with family and friends.
Ann was a pillar of strength for her family. Despite the hardships life threw her way, she never lost her compassionate and self-sacrificing nature. In fact, those traits seemed to grow along with her. She was a caring teacher, a steadfast friend, a loving mother, and a grandmother without comparison. She possessed quiet wisdom, and was always a source of comfort and advice, especially for her grandchildren. Those who knew her best will have fond memories of her love for animals, especially her Jack Russell Terriers, her books, her bright yellow kitchen, her apple pie recipe, special trips, and the sounds of Tony Bennett. It was a great blessing to know and love Ann and she will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her children, Kathleen Chichester, James E. Cooney Jr. (Chris), Norah C. Rogers and Matthew D. Cooney (Lisa); brother, John Keroack; and seven grandchildren. She was the grandmother of the late Laura Chichester and sister of the late David Keroack.
A celebration of her life and mass will be held on May 7, 2022, at St. Lucy Catholic Church, Retsof, N.Y.
Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, is assisting the family. Memories may be shared at www.dunbarfunerals.com.
