She spent most of her childhood in Chicago, Illinois with her big brother, Jack. The two of them had many adventures together and loved to recount the stories when they were together! They had a close bond and loved each other very much.
She moved to Columbia, SC in 1949 for her senior year of high school and to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse! Marilyn graduated from State High School in August 1949. She then enrolled in nursing school and graduated from Columbia Hospital School of Nursing September of 1952. She became a registered nurse in 1953 and began her lifelong nursing career at Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn Veteran’s Hospital. It was here that she used her God given gifts of compassion, empathy and love for others to take care of the veterans and do all she could to nurse them back to health.
In October 1953, Marilyn married Johnie A. Minick (Saluda County, SC). They got married at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, where she’s been a lifetime member and they were married for 46 years. She was predeceased by her husband, Johnie A. Minick, sister in law, Mary Anne Cappelmann (Cap) Kaneft, sister in law, Patty Freyman, nephew, Oliver Jack Kaneft lll, and her older brother Oliver Jack Kaneft, Jr. (Big Dad).
Marilyn retired from the Veteran’s Hospital on her birthday, October 2, 1986 after 33 years of hard but rewarding work and dedicated service.
Marilyn is survived by her beloved family members; brothers, Art Freyman and Wesley Freyman, sister in law Betty Kornegay Kaneft and many nieces and nephews, as well as many great nieces and nephews, and many great great nieces and nephews.
Aunt Marilyn loved cats, dogs and all of God’s creatures and had a big heart for them. She loved to knit blankets for friends and family and knit clothing that she used for the dolls she made! She was a wonderful cook and always gifted many with homemade fudge, cookies and doo dads at Christmas time- it made Christmas even more special! She had a big heart, she loved her family and was a blessing to many. She will be missed!
We would like to thank Aunt Marilyn's niece, Laurel Kaneft (Rick) for all of her love and for the many hours she spent caring for Aunt Marilyn! They had a special bond and friendship.
There will be a private family graveside service at Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens officiated by Aunt Marilyn’s niece, The Reverend Jan Kaneft. (Bill)
