Alfreda Mouchet Thompson

COLUMBIA - A graveside service for Alfreda Mouchet Thompson, 71, will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2024 in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:30 p.m. prior to the service at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Mrs. Thompson died Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Born in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Alfred Mouchet and Mildred Ray Mouchet. She graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Winthrop University and earned a Masters in Chemistry from Furman University. Initially working for DHEC for several years after her graduation, Mrs. Thompson began a long career teaching Chemistry at Midlands Technical College. For a time, she also ran a successful cake business out of her home.

Mrs. Thompson was the definition of a loving mother, never missing a play or baseball game, helping her son move across the country multiple times, and even switching her allegiance from her beloved Clemson Tigers to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. She was a second mother to many, always opening up her home to others, and certainly making sure they were well fed at all hours of the day and night. A beloved professor, Mrs. Thompson will be remembered by her students for her patience and eagerness to help them achieve their dreams.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Shane M. Thompson (Tasneem) of Knightdale, NC; step-daughter, Dale T. Thomas (Scott) of Lexington; brother, Rhett Mouchet (Carol) of Savannah, GA; six step-grandchildren; and her beloved dogs, Indy and Leia.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life, Rupert Leon Thompson; and step-son, Dean L. Thompson (Kelly).

The family wishes to thank her Shandon Baptist Church family, as well as her cherished colleagues and students.
