IRMO – Alexander Harrison McLaurin, 84, of Irmo, died on August 29, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Peggy Gibson McLaurin; son, David; two daughters, Susan (Jim) Foster of Easley and Debbie (Michael) Mc Dermott of Lexington and 2 grandchildren, Alex and Sam Mc Dermott.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 2, 2013 at Wedgefield, Presbyterian Church. His niece, Louise Womble of Columbia, will be conducting the service.
Mr. McLaurin was born in Mullins, on October 7, 1928. He served in the US Constabulary in Germany until 1947, he then entered Clemson University in 1951 and in his senior year he was elected first president of the student body. He worked for Southern Bell in Greenville for 40 years. While in Greenville he was president of the Downtown Kiwanis Club and the Greenville County Cancer Society. In 1976 he moved to Columbia to become Public Relations Director for Southern Bell in South Carolina. He served as president of the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club and South Carolina
Chapter of the Telephone Pioneers.
