Alan was born on OCTOBER 13, 1948 to Herman Nathaniel Kittrell, Jr. and Jeanine A. Kittrell in Orangeburg, SC. After graduating from Dentsville High School, Alan honorably served his country in Vietnam from 1968-1969. After his tour of duty Alan went on to study business at his beloved University of South Carolina. He was an avid Gamecock fan.
After graduation, Alan became a banker and loan officer and had a 25-year career in that field finally retiring from JP Morgan Chase.
In 1979 Alan met Gwen Riley Kittrell and they were married on January 1, 1990 at Rutledge Chapel on the USC Horseshoe in Columbia, SC. Alan and Gwen went on to have two children, McKenzie Alanah Kittrell and Dylan Alexander Kittrell.
Since addiction is a family disease, and in an attempt to bring awareness to the growing concerns of alcohol addiction and its toll on families and the community, Alan’s family is not remaining silent. Instead, they are asking that if you are suffering with addiction, whether it be alcohol or drugs, to please seek help through recovery and rehab. Support is out there and no one needs to suffer in silence.
Alan was predeceased by his parents, his beloved daughter McKenzie Kittrell who passed away in 2006 and brother Timmy G. Kittrell. He is survived by his wife Gwen, son Dylan, brothers Jerry D. Kittrell, and Kim Kittrell, sisters Patricia Sligh, Michelle Beasley, and many nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Shandon United Methodist Church on Devine Street in Columbia, SC at a later date and time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Ronald McDonald House of Durham, NC or your local chapters of AA or NA.
