Margarete Stevens

Margarete Stevens, age 78, passed away Friday, July 19, 2019 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS. She was born in Baxterville, MS and was a longtime resident of Columbia, MS. Mrs. Stevens was a teacher and taught 38 years at West Marion High School and Junior High School where she retired. She was past President of the American Federation of Teachers, a member of the Columbia Library Book Club, and St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Columbia. She loved and enjoyed spending time with family.

Mrs. Stevens was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Stevens; parents, Alfred and Willie Smith; sisters, Lorena King, and Corennia Wood; and brother, George Smith. She is survived by three sons, Chuck Harrison, Andy (Stephanie) Harrison, and Michael (Amanda) Stevens; five grandchildren, Becka Gandy, Tyler Harrison, Casey Butler, Colby Beech, and Jathan Stevens; and three great-grandchildren, Aubree Gandy, Maci Gandy, and Brody Gandy.

A time of visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 8:00pm on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia. Funeral services will begin at 10:00am on Monday, July 22, 2019 at the funeral home chapel with Reverend Warren Selman presiding. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
