John Douglas Goss, of Mobile, Alabama, passed from this life into God's presence on Friday, March 29, 2024 at the age of 79. He was born in Mississippi to Roy and Garnett Goss. John attended Columbia High School and was part of the 1962 graduating class. He studied at the University of Southern Mississippi obtaining a degree in chemistry (1967). John lived most of his life in Mobile, Alabama. He worked for the Geigy Corporation (Ciba-Geigy) for many years as an analytical chemist. He was a faithful and loving caregiver for his aunt Eloise Dent (Chatham) and his mother Garnett Goss (Chatham) until their deaths. John attended Dauphin Way United Methodist Church in Mobile, Alabama at his passing. He had a love for and helped support the Society of St. Stephen, a ministry of Dauphin Way which helped indigents (those impoverished who lack basic necessities of life). John was past president of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and a member for forty six years. The SAR honors our Revolutionary War patriot ancestors by promoting patriotism, serving our communities, and educating and inspiring future generations about the founding principles of our country. John’s hobbies included playing pranks on people, building telescopes, explaining hard to understand subjects to the unenlightened, driving to Rose Hill, Mississippi and walking through forest land, which was one of his favorite places to be. John will be deeply missed as one of the most unique individuals that you could meet.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Geri Goss Sachse; his brother, Judson Goss; and a nephew, Stephen Sachse. John is survived by an aunt, Elizabeth Jane Chatham; a nephew, Richard Sachse and his wife, Molly; and a host of cousins.
A visitation for John will be held Saturday, April 13, 2024 from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM. John will be laid to rest in Woodlawn Cemetery.
