Fred Powell, of Columbia, Mississippi, passed away on Monday, October 12, 2020 at the age of 76. He was born in Oloh, Mississippi to Virgil and Vera Powell and has been a lifelong resident of Marion County. Fred worked for the MS Department of Human Services for 22 years at the Columbia Training School and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Bassfield. He was a Shriner and a 33 Degree Scottish Rite and York Rite Master Mason and member of the Carley Lodge #562. Fred was a faithful follower of Christ who loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and loved playing guitar with several local bands. Fred will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. He was always “clowning around” and loved a good joke. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lou Whiddon; a brother, Eddie Powell; a son, Mitchell Lee Powell; and a grandson, Zeke Powell. Fred is survived by his wife of 53 years, Carol Powell; one daughter, Angel (Jermy) Gibson; five sons, Joey Powell, Farrell (Jessie) Powell, Randy Cornwall, Allen “Goob” Powell, and Scott (Theresa) Powell; two brothers, Robert (Betty) Powell and Wayne (Jeanette) Powell; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. There will be a visitation for Fred at Colonial Funeral Home in Columbia on Wednesday, October 14, 2020 from 5:00pm until 8:00pm. The funeral, officiated by Reverend Valton Douglas and Reverend Daniel Lee, will be at 2:00pm on Thursday, October 15, 2020 in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in the Emmanuel Baptist Church Cemetery assisted by Rhonda Hammond, Christy Jones, Tonya Pierce, Vonda Morrison, Janet Redding, Kristi Lowery, Teddy Lambert, and Mike Blair assisting as pallbearers.
