William was born September 6, 1932 to Nellie (Stewart) and Charles Slemp in Rockport, MO. He was married to Arlene Antoinette Heying on April 4, 1958 in Glasgow, MO. William served his country in the Navy during the Korean War.
In 1963, William began working for the University of Missouri at the Agriculture Experiment Station as an administrative assistant. He was put in charge of the quarter horses that were given to the school by Bob Sutherland. Over the next 30 years, this small group grew into a herd of 20 broodmares. IN ’81 and ’82, William, along with some University students, showed several of these horses and received awards in working hunter and reining. He retired with 30 years of service to the University in 1992.
Throughout the 70’s, William worked around Missouri with 4-H clubs. He traveled to prepare members in conformation and judging. He served on the advisory board and was one of the members who drafted a set of rules and classes for shows in Missouri.
William joined MQHA in 1960 and through the group formed life-long friendships. From ’67-’76, he served on the board of directors for District #2 and served as president in ’76. He held positions as chairman of the Stallion Auction Committee, AQHA judge, and even showed his own horses, winning several awards.
His love for horses was only rivaled by his love for his family. His sons proudly carry on his legacy by training horses at the home place, Slemp Stables.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and grandchild, Travis Morrison.
William is survived by wife of 62 years, Arlene; children Edgar Bryan (Cindi) Slemp of Sturgeon, MO and Sterling Thomas (Heather) Slemp of Eugene, MO; sisters, Anna May Slemp and Betty Joe Slemp; grandchild, Amanda Rollins (Kent) Weis; and great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and William Weis, and Elix Morrison.
