Wanda Jean Barnes-Scott

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2022 at noon at Memorial Funeral Home in Columbia, followed immediately by a funeral service officiated by Pastor Chris Cook. Wanda will be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Wanda was born October 2, 1942 in Columbia to Wallace and Mabel (Coats) Hoffman. She was united in marriage in March of 1960 to Hugh Barnes. From this union, two sons were born: Jeff and Gus.

Wanda and Hugh were both employed by the University of Missouri and each achieved an astounding 42 years of service; he in grounds keeping and she as an administrative assistant. There is a bench in Peace Park and a tree in Francis Quadrangle commemorating their dedication.

At home, Wanda was “the definition of love.” She was always following one of the boys’ sports teams around (or later, the grandkids’), enjoyed family get-togethers, baking cookies with the little ones, and seeing friends at supper clubs. She enjoyed traveling near (boating at the Lake of the Ozarks) and far (vacations in Florida). A long-time member of Parkade Baptist Church, Wanda would later meet her second husband, Jim Scott, there after Hugh passed in 2003.

She is survived by her two children, Jeff (Sherri) Barnes and Gus Barnes; grandchildren, Megan (Chris) Johanning, Courtney (Darrin) Haas, Jake Barnes and Sadie Barnes; great-grandchildren, Mady, Graham, Margo, Sherman, Ehvie, Maxine, Laz and Arya; her stepchildren Kim Kampeter and Kevin Scott and their loving families; as well as a host of extended family members and friends.

In addition to her parents, Wanda is preceded in death by both of her husbands, Hugh Barnes and Jim Scott; her brother, William “Chip” Hoffman; and her granddaughter Kali Barnes.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for the benefit of Wanda's great-grandchildren, Laz and Arya, who lost their mother Kali Barnes earlier this year.
