A visitation will be held Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 9:00 AM at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 West in Columbia followed by a memorial service at 10:00 AM. Velma will be laid to rest alongside her beloved husband at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Velma was born in Moberly on August 3, 1950. Her parents were Warren and Nellie Johnson who preceded her in death. She graduated from Moberly High School. On September 26, 1980 at Wilkes Boulevard United Methodist she was united in marriage to Stewart Crane who preceded her in death.
Velma enjoyed dancing, camping, playing cards and listening to country music. She also especially enjoyed spoiling all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Velma received her registered nursing degree at Moberly Community College and was employed by the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics for many years. For ten years Velma and Stewart lived in Edinburg, Texas where they were members of Maranatha Baptist Church in McAllen.
Survivors include son Randy (April) Sumpter of Kansas City; two step-sons: Ronnie Crane of Hallsville, Mike (Teena) Crane of Bloomington, IL; sister Roberta Kraft of Moberly; five grandchildren: Catie Sumpter, Gage Sumpter, Cody Crane, Jessica (Logan) Cole, Morgan (Andy) Rhoades; four great grandchildren: Harley Benson, Amelia Allen, Elliott Cole, Lydia Cole and a host of nieces and nephews. Velma was preceded in death by her brother Wayne Mellon and brother-in-law Jim Kraft.
