Well, HE finally did it. GOD has called me home. I never expected to see 81 years, but HE blessed me. “GOD IS GOOD.” A few more years with ya’ll would have been nice, but let’s face it, my work here is done. I worked hard, I played hard, and I loved even harder. Nothing was more important than family/friends and I hope ya’ll continue to love on one another.
I was born on the “Hill” in McKittrick Missouri to Leon and Cora Kemp. I had 12 brothers and sisters. Richard K, Larry K, Earl K, Alice K, Lillian K, Juanita K, Willa Mae K, Wayne K, Harry K, Ruth Ann K, Mary Jane, and Danny Jennings. Everyone except Danny has preceded me in death.
Living on the Hill was the most memorable time of my life. Yes, we walked to school in the snow. And yes, we carried pales of water from local wells. Despite segregation, we had great times on the Hill. My Daddy had a passion for cooking and often filled the house with soul food aromas. Collard greens, neckbones, cornbread…oh how I cherished those days!
In those days, most people on the Hill were related. I had Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and many cousins all on the same road. We were a close family and my parents made sure the siblings looked out for each other. Usually if you had a problem with one sibling, you had a problem with all of us. For that reason, some considered us to be a little “crazy”, but we were really just surviving.
In my professional life, I was a registered nurse. I worked at University of Missouri Hospital for 30+ years before retiring.
My favorite thing to do was shopping! I absolutely enjoyed browsing shoe stores, antique stores, furniture stores...actually any store would do. When I wasn’t at the Mall, I enjoyed spending time with family and showing off my dance moves.
I was blessed with four children, Marie Kemp, Wendell Scott, James Sheets, and Kimberly Lopez. Daughter In-Laws Elaine Scott and Rhonda Sheets. I leave behind eight grandchildren, Erica Taylor, Lamar Taylor, Loni Williams, Gabrielle Scott, DaShick Scott, Fabiola Lopez, Devon Sheets, and Jaime Sheets. Six great grandchildren, Marcus Scott, Mackenzie Lewis, Joe Griffin IV, Mackayla James, Teriah Williams, and Myrriad Williams. I also leave behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Well, as I said before, my work here is done. I’m thankful for all things GOD has given. Hugs and Kisses to everyone who has ever shown me love. And always remember, “I LOVE YOU MORE!”
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1, 2024 at Calvary Baptist Church, Fulton, Missouri. Committal prayers will be at 2:00 pm at the Mausoleum in Memorial Park Cemetery, Columbia, MO.
